David Halliday perceives elegance in simplicity, beauty in the mundane, and the brilliant vitality of the people, places, and objects that he encounters on a daily basis. In establishing intimate connections with his subjects, Halliday manifests his vision through the camera lens for the world to see. The traditional sensuality in this work reminds us of the simple pleasures in life that we have come to take for granted. These luscious sepia toned silver gelatin prints bring forth a classical realism much like the great Dutch Renaissance painters of the past. Whether it’s landscapes in Ireland, still life arrangements in a box in Italy, or portraits in his hometown of New Orleans, David Halliday always captures the pure essence of his subject matter. Halliday was born in Glen Cove, New York and studied at both Syracuse University and The Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport. During a brief break from photography, he took a job as a chef. In doing so, he found work at numerous gourmet restaurants throughout the Northeast and Midwest until finally his cooking led him to the cuisine-savvy city of New Orleans. It was there in the early Nineties that he began to pursue photography fulltime. Not only has he photographed the swamps of Louisiana, his travels have taken him to places such as Russia, Indonesia, Ireland, and the exotic realm of the Tongan islands. No matter the location, Halliday always makes great use of his surroundings when creating fine art images.
Along with Watermark, David Halliday is also represented by top galleries in Los Angeles, New York City, and New Orleans. He has also published a hand-bound limited edition book with Steven Albahari of 21st Publishers entitled, “The Perfect World of David Halliday.” It was edited by John Wood and is available for sale at Watermark. His work is featured in many collections including Banana Republic, Philip Morris Corporation, Hunter Museum, The New Orleans Museum of Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
